Artist Keni Davis

Originally from Winfield, Kansas, Keni Davis has lived in Altadena for over twenty years. We are fortunate to have such incredible talent among our residents. In addition to painting beautiful scenic watercolors of the Dena's (Altadena and Pasadena), Keni has created a series of paintings titled "The Hollywood Backlots" which are inspired during his time working as a scenic artist in the movie industry.

Television: Barber Shop

"Hollywood Backlots series represent hundreds of drawings and paintings created from some of the most famed and filmed real estate in the world, for both movies and television." These are candid paintings of sets, props and people he encountered in the movie and television business. Many of his paintings were sketched during lunchtime and then completed when he would return to his Altadena studio.

Located on Woodbury Road near Fair Oaks

"Fine art is a process, not a product," says Keni. "It doesn't start with the paint, nor does fine art end with the picture. The process starts in the artist and continues in the viewer where minds and emotions interact; thus fulfilling the statement that paint, pastel, bronze, etc., are indeed mediums."

Altadena, CA: Located on Lincoln Ave. & Altadena Dr.

We believe it and can see it in his art when Keni says, "Art can be a powerful force for social change. Knowing this, I tend to create whole series of paintings that revolve around issues that are important to me. It’s my way of encouraging, while gently promoting awareness, among my viewers."

For only $15 for a 8" x 10" print (mat included) you can own one of Keni Davis' works of art. Please visit his website at www.keni.com for additional information and to view additional artwork.

Watercolor Magic Magazine will feature my 'Hollywood Backlots' paintings in the August, 2006 issue. You will find it in at your newsstand. Visit their site: www.watercolormagic.com.

Keni has also been featured in Topia Magazine: in an article titled "Capturing Hollywood" and in Pastel Artist International: In the Public Eye.

Hiking near and around Altadena

Now that Spring is here and Summer is on its way, we love being outside and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Altadena. Especially the great hiking trails all around our local area. To begin preparing for your next hiking adventure, there are many incredible online resources to be found. For instance, we found the website www.altadenatrails.org to be very useful.

Cobb Estate—Sam Merrill Trail Start

In the Altadena Trails Org site, we found everything from scheduled events, where to hike, trail conditions, advocacy, information about local wildlife and editorials. They even have information about local hunting laws.

We especially found their information about hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails in the San Gabriel range most informative. They talk about previous hikes and up-coming hikes on their site. They have highlighted hikes such as Mt Lowe, Arroyo Seco, Millard Falls, Rubio Canyon Waterfalls and the waterfalls found on several of the hikes. If you have not already done so, check out Echo Mountain and the Mount Lowe Railway trails.

Mt. Lowe—Sam Merrill Trail Map

And while you are out on the trails, be sure to keep your eyes open for the incredible array of bird species we have in our area. The Pasadena Audubon Society offers a website Where to Bird in and around Pasadena that will give you an idea of what types of birds can be seen.

It is a very informative site for all outdoor enthusiasts and we recommend you check it out before the next time you head out to the trails! But please be aware of ticks, as incidents of Lyme Disease have been reported in the San Gabriel Mountains. Protect yourself by inspecting for ticks after hiking and by wearing protective clothing. Steps to prevent Lyme disease include using insect repellent, removing ticks promptly. Poison Oak is another nuisance to be aware of as well.

And as you head up Lake Avenue to the trails, stop by Oh Happy Days store and cafe to stock up on snacks and fluids, so you have plenty of energy for the hike or for biking up the mountain. Do not get caught without fuel for your body!

Indoor Playground Found Under the Sea

Wondering what to do with your child to brighten their day and, at the same time, give yourself a break? We recommend visiting the indoor playground at Under the Sea in Altadena, at 233 N. Lake Avenue. Your child can play all day and the playground is open for children 6 months to 14 yrs old. In addition to the incredible play area and colorful items to play in and around, it is a great place for your child to interact with others and enjoy enriching activities and imaginative play.

The call it "a special place for children and their grown-ups." With its floor-to-ceiling murals of a bright and wonderful aquatic world, Under the Sea lets children jump on the moon bounce, ride bikes and cars, play house, crawl through the climbing structures and enjoy an adventurous underwater theme experience.

They also offer totally private birthday parties, where you and your guest have the entire activity center to yourselves. Choose from different party packages, such as "Under the Sea Treasure Hunt" or a "5 Star" party, which includes a party coordinator, party assistants, visits by a beautiful Mermaid, Pirate or Clown, face painting, balloons, age-appropriate games, pizza and juice, party favors and cake, and peace of mind for the parents!

Please contact Under the Sea for more information or to book an event. And be sure to ask about their group discounts and membership opportunities.

McGinty's Gallery and Arts Society in Altadena

Part cooperative art gallery and part treasure chest of fabulous finds, from jewelry to vintage items and random collectibles, the Underground Arts Society or "UAS"—as the locals call it—is a true delight to discover. And if you are so lucky to be invited to spend a moment in the secluded garden, the experience becomes even more delightful.

Owner Ben McGinty has lived in Altadena his entire life and is very much a fixture of our community and has been at the same location at 2473 Lake for many, many years.

Featuring some of the most talented, colorful and spirited artists in the local area, you know the McGinty's has a lot of character and examples of diversified, intriguing and controversial artwork. The type of work, passion and local Altadena production is what makes this local establishment so memorable. As the tee shirt says, "Come See the Artists That the Other Galleries Won't Let You Discover."
